Family Day in Kolkata

VAANI hosted a Family Day on 6th February 2010 for around 66 deaf children and their families in Kolkata. The purpose of organising this Family Day was to bring together deaf children from various schools of Kolkata and their families for a day of fun and enjoyment. The Family Day is seen as a forum where families can communicate and learn from each other’s experiences. It also provides an opportunity for parents to see how other parents cope with similar issues and to identify people who could lend moral support, as only parents can understand the concerns of other parents.

The 160 participants for this Family day came from JEM Kinder Garten School, Pandua Pratibandhi Kalyan Samity, Anwesha,The Oral School For The Deaf Children and Care and counselling Centre. We also had four young deaf adults helping with the conducting of the event and mingling with the guests. It was good for the parents present to interact with these successful youth who often are involved in VAANI’s programmes as deaf role models.

In the pre-lunch session, a painting competition was held for the children who were divided into two groups according to their age. The parents meanwhile were kept occupied playing musical chairs. Post-lunch, the children enjoyed themselves at the merry-go-round, the jumping castle and the ball pool. Tea and snacks were served to all the participants and everyone present present went home with goodies – there were packets of tea for the grownups and cookies, chips, biscuits and stationery items for the children.

The event could be such a big success only thanks to the support of the main sponsor Mcleod Russell and organisations ITC, J Thomas, Camlin, Keventer Agro and the Inner Wheel Club. We hope to conduct many such Family Days in all the States where we have VAANI projects.
