VAANI Activities in the Northeast – September 2011

Parents’ Workshop:

Date: 6 to 9 September 2011

A series of parents’ workshop took place during the first week of September from 6 to 9 September in Nalbari with the parents of our partner organization SAROTHI and in Guwahati with the parents covered by SSA. The topic of the workshop was social and emotional needs of deaf children and their families. The curriculum of the workshop also included inputs on communicating with a deaf child and rights of children with disabilities.


World Deaf Week:

Date: 24 to 30 September 2011

World Deaf Week was celebrated in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram in a grand way.

In Assam, 25 September 2011, Sunday VAANI brought together children from various integrated schools covered by SSA to be together with the children of Bhawri Devi Sarawgi Government Deaf School at Guwahati to share their ideas and expression of art and drawing.

In Meghalaya, 30 September 2011, Friday VAANI conducted another painting competition with children from various integrated schools covered by SSA and  the children of School and Centre for Hearing Handicapped Children SCHHC at Shillong’s Don Bosco Technical School. There was also a mime act based on the famous Mr. Bean character by a deaf student of SCHHC who made the crowd break into fits of laughter.

In Mizoram, a talk show took place on 19th September with the key people from various fields and also a street play took place on 25th September to spread awareness in the community in Aizawl.
